Today I had a friend’s flash drive fry on her, and it was where all of her work was. Now she’s learning to do two things. One is to backup to another drive, always, the other is to keep an online backup whenever possible.
We should all do the same.

Fire up linux, get ddrescue, do a byte-for-byte copy from the usb stick to a file on the hard drive, download a hexeditor (ghex2 for example), search for relevant keywords, copy and paste whatever chunks you can get your hands on.
I just did exactly the same as the above last week for another friend that kept all her files on a flash drive.
Carbonite allows me to sleep at night.
